The Best Civilization Ever

Throughout history, societies have seemed to rise and then collapse. New civilizations emerge, ones that are better in some major way. Some civilizations have lasted for longer than others (such as England), but most of them were powerful once and then whittled away due to inefficiencies in their society. In this essay, I will explain to you the model for the most efficient society in the world (and beyond, at some point).

At the core of inefficient societies are their governments. A good government usually results in a good society. In my model, the way everything is organized will be coded on the blockchain, using something called a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization). DAOs are extremely efficient because they get rid of the bureaucracy of elections. Because the government and the laws are written in code, there is no need for any government employees, except for those that are overseeing the code.

All laws, and the constitution, will also be written in code. Because simple automated intelligence is unable to comprehend the differences in each situation, artificial intelligence will be used to determine how to handle the situation. If you want to take someone to court, you will submit a proposal to the AI engine. Then, the other person will submit their argument about the situation so that the AI can judge how each side should be compensated.

The AI will also be programmed with machine learning to edit the laws and constitution if needed. If a situation gets out of hand due to the AI’s decision, the AI will learn from that mistake and then when another similar situation occurs it will be able to handle it better. This cycle of continuous learning will improve the laws, thus resulting in better governance. Since there is no human intervention required to improve their decisions, it eliminates corruption.

At the core of a successful civilization is free speech. The Ancient Greeks acknowledged this, and that led to one of the most successful civilizations in history. Of course, back then it was different to now. Today it relies mostly on social media, so getting social media done correctly is extremely important.

In my civilization, social media will be regulated by the government. The records of what people said and did on the internet will be recorded on the blockchain. Then, AI will relentlessly backtest the information from the social media posts, and create a score of how accurate that person is. If you want to say something as a joke, you will have to mark it as that so that you don’t get a lower accuracy score. This applies not only to social media but to journalism as well.

There will be no content algorithms, because it is not an ad-based model. The AI will compile a measure of the well-being of the people on the platform, inclusivity, hate speech, etc. Machine learning will be used to improve this score. Also, information about finance will be heavily regulated so that people aren’t ‘talking up their wallets’, for lack of a better term, or spreading misinformation related to the assets they own.

The economy and organization of assets is very important for a wide variety of reasons. The most important likely being: if people are fairly compensated for their work, it will reinforce work ethic and encourage innovation. Right now, there are public records made of paper, located at an office. That is not efficient. Using NFTs will eliminate the possibility of these records being tampered and make them more widely available.

The only way that this would be technically feasible is if the medium of exchange would be a cryptocurrency. This would be practical anyway, because it eliminates the problem of inflation and the record of transactions are available on the blockchain, reducing the chances of corruption. For example: if you wanted to buy an apple, you would buy it with your cryptocurrency wallet. That transaction would be recorded on the blockchain, and an NFT would be minted certifying that you own that apple.

The system of creating companies is efficient enough, but to connect it with our blockchain system we would need to do a few things. First of all, everything would be recorded on the blockchain. Second of all, I would make obtaining equity in companies much easier by creating equity ‘tokens’ (basically NFTs) that are run on the blockchain. Second of all, companies would be required to report to an AI engine to ensure that they’re behaving in a way that works with, not against, the constitution and laws.

In an ideal society, finance markets would be decentralized and highly regulated. To be registered as a publicly traded company, you need to make your governance structure transparent, which will be done with the help of AI. Finance would be available to everyone, not just the rich and highly educated. This levels the playing field, but it also relies on education to ensure that people are educated about what they’re buying.

Needless to say, the importance of education goes much farther than just the financial markets. A lot of thought and consideration needs to go into the way that people are educated, and history has shown that this is one of the most important factors of a healthy society. Greece, for example, had well educated people and was able to overcome some of its hard times while Sparta, with little education, was unable to innovate and was taken over by a smarter civilization, despite their dominance in battle.

The invention of the modern school system roughly coincided with the time when children started becoming enslaved in factories. This is not a coincidence. Schools were created to give them the basic skills to become helpful in factories. Inside of schools, there are bells interrupting your every thought, industrial lockers, and oftentimes teachers who spend most of their time talking. This does not inspire an interest in learning and innovation, and certainly wouldn’t be something that I would include in my society.

My schools would include hands-on learning experiences, where students would learn through projects. It would be a cross between project based learning and montessori. If a kid was interested in something, he/she would be encouraged to pursue that interest. Of course, the basics such as reading, writing, math, science, and finance would be taught in schools. Transcripts would be unimportant, as everyone would have the right to higher education.

Just like the Native Americans, the importance of protecting the environment would be included in the basic studies. In my society, the environment would be protected. I strongly believe that, with our extremely high population, humans can no longer live sustainably on Earth. So, when feasible, my society will move into space and the buildings that are incompatible with animals will be destroyed, so that the animals can live freely.

To encourage innovation in the environmental conservation sector, funding will be given out to companies who have hit sizable milestones. Five percent of the funding given to the people in the environmental conservation sector will be given to companies making rockets, because, in reality, people can’t live sustainably on earth anymore. The Native Americans education about the environment was great, and this piece of Native American culture will be infused into my society.

One thing that every innovative society does is change. Think about the middle ages, when there was literally no change in culture, at all, for hundreds of years. People were unhappy, there was monarchy, and lack of innovation. In my society, there will be no set of beliefs infused into my culture, except for the importance of equality among every single human being. Religious beliefs or a form of spirituality that have a system of hierarchy will be completely illegal, because it discriminates among the so called ‘lesser’ peoples.

Art and music must follow the no discrimination law as well, as they can have a profound impact on peoples minds. For the most part, the creators will be able to express their feelings as long as they do not discriminate or possibly harm people. As an example of a situation when a creator’s content could possibly harm people: spreading covid-19 misinformation online, in a song.

Another important factor for the wellbeing of humans is medical care, for obvious reasons. In my society, medical care will be free and controlled by private institutions. Doctors must be trained, with a college degree. All records of each patient are recorded on a private blockchain, so that information doesn’t get lost, stolen, corrupted, and so that it is easy to find if you need to change doctors. The ethical programming companies are required to prevent monopolies and price inflating among big pharma companies.

Architecture will be regulated in the same way that it usually is, except that it is important that they are environmentally friendly. The building must have standardized metrics, which will be sent to a computer, which will analyze those metrics and then run a simulation with all of the buildings in the country to make sure that they are sustainably built and will not impact the environment by too much.

My society will be heavily based on blockchain technology and AI. Some of its key goals will be sustainability, no discrimination, and innovation. The goal of my society is not to just stay one way. I want it to continue to grow, improve, and be constantly innovative. It will also be decentralized, with no central government. In conclusion, it is a society that is aligned with the interests of the people.

  1. This is an impressive modern Utopia. Timmy describes a futuristic vision of how the ideals of his generation could make society improve in many aspects. This demonstrates considerable sophisticated thought , with historical and innovative examples to support his theories, from economics, education and politics, through AI, cryptocurrency as well as sustainability .

  2. Timothy, I read your piece on The Best Civilization Ever with interest. As I read it, your piece does not consider human frailties, including greed and hunger for power. I wondered who would determine the parameters of the DAOs. Having lived for seventy-four years, I would expect that whoever does determine the parameters will set them up in their own interests. The same is true for artificial intelligence – whoever sets it up will control it. One should not expect fairness or even honesty.

I do not agree that the modern school system is related to “the time when children started becoming enslaved in factories.” As I recall, the school system was created as a reform against the factories and other systems, which disadvantaged children and gave children greater equality.

I sharply disagree with the assertion that there was no change in culture during the Middle Ages. I believe that there was great change and development during that time.

I do not believe that anyone should ban religions and believe that, at least in the case of my religion, “lesser people” are highly valued.

I am available to discuss these issues in person on the mainland of the United States whenever you return.

  3. You have obviously given a lot of thought about how society of the future can improve, Timmy. I believe the hope for the future lies in the thinking skills of the younger generations. Some of the dependence on AI worries me because although it is a way to control, it may lead to over control without human conversation? But overall, I applaud your work. I hope this post encourages others to think about how society could improve. This is very well written, as well as thorough
